God’s Promises and Sigur Ros on 5.20.12

On this communion weekend, we focused the entire worship experience on this verse…

“For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us…was not Yes and No, but in him it has always been Yes.  For no matter how many promises God has made, they are Yes in Christ.  And so through him the Amen is spoken by us to the glory of God.”
(2 Corinthians 1:19-20)

After singing the great hymn Our Great Savior and the Redman song 10000 Reasons, Darren talked a bit about the many promises of God being made YES in Christ.  “To help us prepare for communion”, he said, “we want to give you the next 3-4 minutes to immerse yourselves in many of God’s promises”.

As our band began to quietly play the epic Sigur Ros song Ára Bátur, Paul JVR opened up the scriptures.  He read promise after promise from the bible, letting these truths wash over us.  And as the music built (with our choir joining with glorious “Ahhs”!), we filled a huge screen at the back of the stage with all these promises and just let them overwhelm us.  Here are a few of the passages…

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order  that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 1:18-20)

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart.  And the  peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” (John 14:27)

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”  (Matthew 11:28-29)

When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you.
When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down.
When you’re between a rock and a hard place,
it won’t be a dead end.  (Isaiah 43:2 )

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.  (Philippians 4:19)

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.  (Deuteronomy 7:9 (NIV))

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Romans 8:38-39)

When this reflection crescendoed and eventually landed, Darren stepped into the silence and declared “All of these promises are made YES in Christ.  Let’s celebrate communion together.”  It was a profoundly beautiful experience.

Thanks be to God.
