Entering into Advent on 11.27.11

This weekend we entered into the season of Advent as a community.  After singing the great hymn Great is Thy Faithfulness and worship song Revelation Song, we began the preparation.

I told a story of how my wife and I set up a nursery this fall for our new baby.  First we had to clean the junk out the room to make space, and then we needed to set up appropriate ways to receive and serve the baby (crib, changing table, etc).  What a perfect picture of the season of Advent!

Our culture tells us that December should be the most stressful, busy, consumer-driven, materialistic season of the year.  But the genius of Advent is it reminds us that we don’t have to live that way. And it guides us onto another path.  Here’s a bit of how we practiced together…

We don’t have to give into the manic, consumer-driven craziness of this season.  Instead, may we let go of the things that don’t really matter, and grab hold of what matters most.
