Baptism on 03.13.11

Moving Pictures

It’s tough to put into words what it’s like to experience a large number of people being baptized on one weekend.  Luke 15 tells us that all of heaven rejoices for one lost person who returns home.  If that’s the case, I would love to see a picture of what is going on in heaven during a weekend when more than 100 people are baptized.  What a moving picture that would be!

I haven’t seen a picture of that, but Aaron Niequist sent me a different picture a couple days ago.  He sent me a picture of a young man, whom I’ve never met before who was baptized over the weekend.  Just looking at this picture makes me want to celebrate all over again.  His T-Shirt reads Acts 22:16:

“…now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.”

I don’t know all of the specifics of his story…but honestly, that doesn’t change my experience of the weekend.  Each one of us here at Willow Creek has a story – it’s a story of brokenness being made beautiful; it’s a story of sin being washed away; it’s a story moving from death to life.  I don’t need to know the details of this young man’s story to be able to celebrate the fact that he doesn’t want to wait on the sideline anymore.  His sins have been washed away, he has called on the name of Jesus and all of heaven is celebrating.

Take a moment and remember when you were baptized.  Thank God for his grace that moves us all from death to life.  If you haven’t been baptized, ask yourself the question from Acts 22 – “what are you waiting for?”  The more I think about it, the most moving picture there is, is a single person moving from death to life.
