A song from Sharon

This past fall, I had the honor of leading the worship experience for WOW (the willow midweek worship experience)….

The focus of our time together was the song “You’re Beautiful” by Phil Whickam- a sweet, simple & poetic love song about the beauty of God…. The first two verses point the listener to God in nature, which for me, is a very compelling idea. I grew up in the inner city of Chicago so I didn’t really get to experience mountains, stars or beautiful sunrises too often. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing like raw, city energy–my Chicago roots run deep & I love that part of my experience. However, it’s always refreshing when I’m able to taste & see Gods goodness in a way different from my norm….
I am overwhelmed & then relieved at the thought that God is bigger than any box I put him in. His beauty can be seen in the rural moonlit night, on city street corners, a small village in Madagascar, or in an uninhibited child. And just when I think I’ve seen it all, I’m surprised all over again….

Eventually the song builds & points us to what I believe is the most beautiful imagery of all. The cross, where Jesus, lover of Humanity, saves us… Here are the lyrics & song:

My favorite part in the song is the chorus that flows in & out of the verses. However, it’s also the only part in the song without actual words or content—you just sing a simple, “ooo” sound. Yet, there’s something beautifully haunting & inviting about the simplicity of the chorus line. It’s like when you open up a present & all you can say “ooo” or “whoa”! I guess that’s how it is sometimes, when we encounter Gods beauty through creation & there are no concrete words to express our awe…

One Response to “A song from Sharon”

  1. Someone from our church have kids and grandkids that go to your church at willow creek and they heard the song “God is Here” and brought me the words but I want to hear how you did it. I listened to Karen’s version and am curious how you guys performed it in worship. I see on your website that Sharon led the congregation in that song but can’t listen to it anywhere. Is it posted anywhere for me to hear? I am the worship coordinator at our church and love the lyrics of the song. Thanks, Lorena
